For an artist, some say hands are the vital connection to releasing creativity. Second only to my family as a hobby my passion was painting, writing, and playing music. However following a problem with a kidney stone, I became septic, as a result to save my life the decision was made to amputate my limbs below elbow, below knee. A few years removed from the devistation of losing my limbs I have resumed a full life.

My family and I would like to thank everyone for your cards, letters and, email expressing good wishes and health for me while I am in recovery, rehab from my double hand transplant.

On 10 - 05 - 12 - it will be one full year since my double hand transplant operation. The year previous August 2010, and the first eight months after my operation were busy for my family and me, traveling to the hosopital for therapy, and getting adjusted to life with hands. Our world is slowing to normal, and we're looking forward to the holiday's.
I have decided to write a book about the journey my family and I have traveled beginning with my decision in 2010.

Artist Richard Mangino, friend of Dr. Perlman and survivor of a severe septic infection that ravaged his body's systems and led to the amputation of all four of his limbs, painted the t-shirt design. The unique design depicted athletes of all genders, sizes, and abilities in front of a Boston-theme background. T-shirts were distributed to all Healthy Athletes® Special Smiles® volunteers.

I am working my way through this site as of yet the art has not been scanned only photos there are more paintings, and drawing to be displayed. In time I plan to make available signed museum quality prints on paper, and some on canvas you can inquire on the contact page. My paintings are mostly a mix of arcryic, marker, and pencil on canvas, and I have many drawings pencil, and marker.
I understand I am not a fine artist this is obvious. I just depict how I feel about the subject matter. Much of my work appears animated, it is what it is. I do not paint, or draw daily, my first passion is writing music, and although I still play guitar a bit, I mostly write poetry, short stories, and novels. I have written four books, four short stories, and a small book of poetry, satire, and essays as of yet unpublished.
With the help of my Prosthestist I have designed/modified the prosthetic mechanical arms I wear.
